Companies Doing Good

After all that finger wagging, now for something a bit more positive. The following are some spotlighted companies that are using their resources to erase their carbon footprint. Also on this page are a few ideas to keep your own footprint down to a bare minimum.

IBM: These guys are way ahead of the curve. They've been measuring their carbon footprint since 2000, they've established clear goals to reduce their impact, they support public policy to help climate change, and they've made public information available about their carbon reduction efforts. Most impressive, they've teamed up with TOK to create solar panels that are affordable and easy to use.

Better Place: Imagine getting rid of gas for cars, creating electric cars, building a battery recharge station network, and developing renewable energy. These guys did.

Cannon: This company has identified additives that increase impact strength and flame retardance and combines them at an optimized ratio to instill recycled material with the same levels of performance for these properties as those offered by virgin plastic. Recycled plastic produced by this original technology is used in the production of internal components for copying machines while the external housings of the copying machines are produced using thin-walled multi-layer injection molding technology also developed by Canon. These efforts have made possible the increased use of recycled plastic.

You've heard it a thousand times, but replacing traditional bulbs with fluorescent bulbs is one of the easiest things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. Fluorescent bulbs last up to 10 times longer than regular bulbs, they use 75% less energy, and for each bulb you change you save about $30 annually.

Put your computer and peripherals on a powerstrip, and turn it off when you go to sleep. It'll save about $60 per year, which is about equal to HALF a ton of CO2!
